Journey’s Beginning

"Oh my," Ardis declared. "What a feeling of freedom!" She turned back to look at the rise which lay between them and where Matlowe was located, falling behind them. They just emerged from the thick of the forest and mounted a tall hill to get a look of the land about them. They had been on the trail for hours and now the results could be seen. Sabin chuckled grandly, agreeing with her wholeheartedly.

"Come on, you can put that thing aside for a few moments," Maren teased Ryes, as she studied both her compass and smaller map, which she folded, so as to make carrying it easier. She had a small journal of just numbers and symbols she carried in a pocket which she sometimes consulted, too. She looked up to him smiling as she shook her head no. "You've got to see this! It’s a great view!" he pleaded.

"But, I’ve seen it," she assured him as she focused upon his face. "This is as far as I dared go before. The last time I came out here, I barely made it home before bedtime. Rowan was very upset with me that night!"

"So, you're saying that you've been further out from Matlowe than any of the rest of us have been, already?" Garth asked, as he saw she had an impish gleam in her eyes.

"Not counting a few short trips with the caravaners, the first time I came out here was by accident. I was tracking a tusker and by the time I brought him down, and had the time to look at where I was, I was fairly shocked. Later, I came out here purposefully to see what was around. Some of the larger game animals can be found in this area. With the shelter of the forest nearby and the grasslands around them for food, they're abundant. If we want something fresh for dinner, this is the place to find it," she informed him with a knowing smile. Her own gather pouch was half full of berries, greens and tubers for their evening meal and for a few days to come, already.

"Look, you're right!" Torr told them as he pointed out a small herd of tuskers about a hundred yards ahead of them, crossing the trail. "Let's go get dinner," he suggested to Shadd, as he hefted his spear. She nodded as she got hers off Honey. She and Ryes had left their spears there in a special holder, until they needed them. Ryes put away her map and compass, as she chuckled at the happy look in Shadd's eyes. The two hunters bounded off together.

"Let's find a good campsite," Sabin suggested to his lady, as he hugged Ardis to his side. They headed downhill behind their friends, following more leisurely.

"One with some clear water flowing nearby," Maren called out to their backs. He shook his head and then turned for a last look in the direction of Matlowe. "We might as well enjoy our first night
